that was my second attempt at reading it and i could get through it.... couldn't even come close to the quarter mark... maybe when you start i will try again but i don't know if i can bear the shame of a third failure... in the mean time, consider the lobster is much more digestible ha-ha

Comment on 10 Reasons Not to Buy a Kindle by Katie

1) Put the Kindle in a zip lock bag.
2) The battery lasts for 2 weeks, so the chances of that happening aren't very high.
3) I read at coffeeshops ALL the time. Sure, people can't see what you're reading, but that's not why you read, anyway. I also go to bookstores often and take pictures of the covers of books I'm interested in.
4) You underline words to remember to look them up, right? The Kindle has a built-in dictionary. Just navigate to the word in the text, and the definition shows up at the bottom of the screen. You can also highlight passages you want to remember, and make notes on them if you want. These notes are synced across all devices and can be accessed online as well.
5) You can "dog-ear" pages on the Kindle too.
6) Who, specifically?
7) Do you display all your books, or just the ones you like? I buy physical copies of the ones I love, and now my bookshelves are filled with only books I'd actually recommend to people. (This is similar to the way I treat music.)
8) I think you're scraping the bottom of the barrel now, if that's a real factor in your decision-making.
9) A little power does a lot to charge the Kindle. I find mine is mostly charged after just an hour.
10) I love books too. But I don't love all books. I enjoy seeing Murakami on my shelves, but I'm glad I could read a Twilight book without anyone knowing what I was reading. And now that I've finished it, I don't need to think about it ever again.

Hi Meg!! Those definitely are good reasons, especially the grad school part of it. I made way too many trips to NJ Books in college! My students always complain about how heavy their textbooks are, so that would be better health-wise if it got to the point where we were using them in schools. But yeah, ultimately I could see it leading us down a horrible path. How long will it take for ads to appear on the side of your book if it's an eBook? And will that, then, affect which books publishers take risks on, in the way that corporate sponsors have large says in what happens in the organizations they represent? An article I recently read said that some people like the kindle because it's easier to eat and read. The multitasking culture is a dangerous thing, I think--not to get all transcendental, but it's better to focus and absorb (savor a meal, savor a chapter) than spread our attention out on several things at once.
